Mental Illness, Depression and Violence
This page last updated 8/1/18

The human brain is a chemical computer, an amazingly powerful chemical computer that uses 25% of the total energy we burn to stay alive. The complexity and interrelationships of all the "chemical reactions" necessary to make the brain work are about 1% understood. The brain gets all its fuel from the food we eat. Sadly, the current state of food in this country has strayed so, so far from what our bodies and brain need to function properly. 90% of the food consumed in this country is health damaging in at least one way, usually many ways. I have personally seen the amazing results when someone changes to a diet of all health enhancing foods (100% plant based , mostly raw, organic and lots of sprouts and greens, no oils). Most American eaters are victims of the current state of food science that produces highly processed, dead mixtures laden with toxic herbicides, pesticides, pollutants, genetically modified, artificially preserved garbage that looks like food, tastes great, but slowly poisons you into a state of ill health that disables you and kills you prematurely.

The corporate food system is dispicable. They add ingredients to make every day food more addictive than cocaine and then they add toxic brain damaging flavor enhancer's that trick the taste buds into thinking it all tastes wonderful. What can we do? First, when we become aware of a friend or loved one with physical or mental issues or abnormalities, think "healing diet" and discourage the pharmaceutical approach which dangerously messes up the brain's delicate chemistry and doesn't fix the underlying cause which is poor nutrition/toxic diet.

Been diagnosed with one of the 365 "mental illnesses"? Need immediate help and support? There is an excellent resource here in Cincinnati called the Holistic Mental Health Network.
A great group of caring people including a few psychologists. Contact them at
holisticmh@yahoo.com or cell (513) 328-8178 or their crisis line (513) 282-2273.

NOTE: Most prescribed psych drugs are terribly addicting so it is advisable to wean yourself off of them slowly and under the direction of a doctor or pactitioner familiar with the procedures and dangers involved.

First understand that the brain is a chemical computer so to speak, and when the chemistry is out of balence, it can produce some out of the ordinary behaviors, even auditory and visual stimuli. Today's food system is incredibly toxic so the first course of action should always be get on a clean, organic, gluten free, whole food plant based diet. Avoid foods preprepared by a corporation or corporate restaurant, no meat, dairy, bread or sugar. Keep oils to an absolute minimum. Give that 3 months and likely all symptoms will be gone. See the website Forks over Knives for ideas on how to eat this way.

Partially to blame is the medical cartel who have people convinced that the sun will give them skin cancer so they should hide behind the strongest sunblock you can buy.

Bi-Polar Disorder

Doctors will tell you there is no cure, the diagnosis is a lifetime of taking expensive drugs. Almost 4% of the US population will be diagnosed with Bi-Polar at some point in their life. (Average age is 25!). The prevalence rate for bipolar disorder is approximately 1.1% of the population over the age of 18 (source: NIMH) or, in other words, at any one time as many as 51 million people worldwide suffer from bipolar disorder. Bi-polar disorder accounts for approximately $7.6 billion in direct healthcare in the. U.S.
Sometimes referred to as manic-depressive disorder, is characterized by dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels that affect a person’s ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. These shifts in mood and energy levels are more severe than the normal ups and downs.

My dear friend Suzy Hoseus was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the early 1980’s as a young woman. At that time she was hospitalized and told there was no cure for her disorder. After being on medications including lithium for twenty years, she discovered the healing power of diet. Suzy and her family have been eating a raw vegan diet for 15 years. Since then she is symptom-free, and has not had so much as an aspirin since 2000! In 2007 the Hoseus family moved to an 8 acre farm in Walton, Kentucky. It is appropriately named “Blessings Farm". Her book, "Healing Bipolar and Depression: My Journey to Whole Health second edition", can be purchased here and is a testament to the power of diet to heal the "incurable": BUY HER BOOK HERE SEE HER WEBSITE HERE.

From my studies and experience one of the strongest contributing causes to "behavior" issues is dairy products. Dairy products naturally contain 59 bio-active pregnant cow hormones. One of these hormones is designed to make the mother cow "irritable" and easily angered so that she acts aggressively to protect her young. These hormones effect humans the same way. It's common knowledge that you don't go near a wild animal protecting its young, but it's not common knowledge that the hormones so beautifully designed by nature can have a devastating and even violent effect on people's behavior. This is also an underlying cause of the group of behavior symptoms known as PMS.

SUICIDE

suicide

These statistics are really troubling. I believe the root cause of most suicides to be a common form of malnutrition, a chemical imbalance from the ideal state that humans thrive under. In 11 years of study the overall conclusion I have come to is that we Americans have gone way down the wrong path of how we should properly fuel our bodies.
Studies have shown that diet's high in fish are linked to increase suicide rates. Theh theory here is that the mercury in fish damages the brain in ways that promote depression and thus suicide. Read report here.

The February 14, 2012 issue of Nutrition Journal (Nutr J. 2012 Feb 14;11(1):9) includes a study in which omnivores eating the standard American Diet were randomly assigned to various groups which excluded either meat, fish, or poultry or a group that was entirely vegetarian.
Study participants then completed various tests including a food frequency questionnaire, the Profile of Mood States questionnaire and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales. The researchers found that high intakes of arachidonic acid (AA) in animal protein resulted in mood swings leading to depression. They concluded:
"Restricting meat, fish, and poultry improved some domains of short-term mood state in modern omnivores. To our knowledge, this is the first trial to examine the impact of restricting meat, fish, and poultry on mood state in omnivores."

evolution to fat

Is this where we are headed? Most definitely yes.
Can we take steps today to shift this trend? Yes.
Will it be easy?  Definitely not.
Do we have all the answers? No.
Do we have a very clear idea what foods human thrive on? YES

The TRUTH is that our Standard American Diet is so far down the wrong path from what is the ideal diet for  humans that we have lost sight of what is normal and what true health looks like. We are not even close. If we truly want to make an impact on the behavior and health of our most troubled neighborhoods and citizens and indeed all people, we have to abandon and discourage participation in the Standard American diet and replace it with creatively prepared fresh organic produce, fruits, seeds, nuts and legumes. It is said there is over a trillion dollars at stake to keep America eating the way we are now. A movement to change this will have a lot of opposition. We already see a lot of disinformation and naysayers especially from the media.  Companies and agencies who profit from or whose livelihood depends on the current system will work against us and spending millions to create disinformation and confusion..  This problem can only be solved from the grass roots level upward. The people need to be educated. For the past 3 years the Clergy Health Council of Greater Cincinnati has been conducting in church health seminars to educate people on how a change to a plant based diet can put control of their own health back in their own hands.

We are poised and ready to take the next step to make a real difference in this city. To make Cincinnati a shining example that other cities will be compelled to follow. It will take a lot of good people coming together to first educate and then assist in making the changes needed. We will have to revive our neighborhoods from fresh food deserts to fresh food oasis’s.  We hope you will join us on this worthwhile journey.

Here is a good example that shows just how malnourished we are as a nation:
The following chart shows in the left column the top nine foods (in lbs) eaten by Americans. There is an organization called EAT RIGHT AMERICA that has come up with a nutritional "score" for each food ingredient called the ANDI score. If you shop at Whole Foods you will notice they use this score in the produce section signs. In a nutshell it is a score from 0 to 1000 that indicates how nutrient dense a food is. In the right column are some of the foods that are ranked highest with Kale and Collards both getting the top score of 1000.

TOP 9 FOODS EATEN BY AMERICANS TOP 9 FOODS in NUTRITIONAL DENSITY
Whole cows milk Kale
2 percent cows milk Collard greens
Processed American cheese
Bok choy
White bread Spinach
White flour Brussel sprouts
White rolls Arugula lettuce
Refined sugar cabbage
Colas Romaine lettuce
Ground beef Broccoli
TOTAL ANDI SCORE ALL 9 = 152 TOTAL ANDI SCORE ALL 9 = 6042

From the above chart you can see that the top nine foods Americans eat have almost no nutritional value at all with a total score of 152. Using this data you would have to eat 40 meals made from the foods on the left column to equal just one meal of foods from the right column. This should give you a pretty clear indication just how far off we are as a nation and why nutrition education is the key to solving not just our health crisis, but our behavior and violence crisis as well. Download a printable version of the above chart here.

If you are thinking that its best to leave the solution to this problem to the professionals then you had better reconsider. They are part of the problem. The altering of the bodies fragile chemical balance is one of the cornerstones of allopathic medicine and in almost every case it turns out to be nothing more than hiding the symptoms and causing bigger health problems. In this case it's Prozac, a drug prescribed for depression and "misbehaving children" that has a long record of violent and self destructive behavior attached to it. Because poor diet is the root cause of the "behavior" problems that drugs like Prozac are prescribed for it's no wonder that drugs don't solve the problem and in many cases cause worse behavior problems.

Vegetarian Food Goes to Jail
- We asked Dr. Neal Barnard, "We often hear that vegetarians are less aggressive, calmer, more peaceful people. Is there any medical evidence to support this view?" Dr. Barnard answered as follows:
"Yes. A Massachusetts study on male aging showed that men who had higher levels of SHBG (sex-hormone binding globulin) in their blood were rated by their wives as less aggressive and less domineering. SHBG is a protein that binds to testosterone and reduces its activity, which is generally a good thing. As it happens, high fiber diets boost SHBG."

Robert Whitaker’s research uncovers so-called advances in the treatment of mental illness with drugs.

According to Robert, the widespread use of lobotomies in the 1920s and 1930s gave way to electroshock therapy in the 1950s and a wave of new drugs. The drug companies lauded this as a huge advance in medical care for the mentally ill.

Yet each year since then there is a rising number of people suffering from all kinds of mental disabilities and we now spend over 40 billion a year on drugs to treat mental illness.

But do they really work?

In what is perhaps Whitaker’s most startling revelation, he examines how drug companies in the 1980s and 1990s skewed their studies to prove that new antipsychotic drugs were more effective than the old, while keeping patients in the dark about dangerous side effects.

Robert shows how the pharmaceutical industry and psychiatric drugs came about and raises important questions about our obligations to the mad, the meaning of “insanity,” and what we value most about the human mind.

Find out what the drug companies don’t want you to know about drugs fixing chemical imbalances, and what can be done to help make the treatment of mental illness more humane.

Processed Meats linked to manic episodes:
COULD BEEF JERKY
CONTRIBUTE TO MANIC EPISODES?
By Maria Cohut www.medicalnewstoday.com
Manic episodes usually occur as part of a mood
disorder known as bipolar disorder, characterized by
swings between opposite moods: feeling extremely
"high" (mania) or feeling very "low" (depression).
Does eating beef jerky and other processed meats
contribute to manic episodes in people who are at
risk?
During a manic phase, a person experiences a state
of intense emotional arousal. They may feel euphoric
and over-energetic, and this can result in
hyperactivity and insomnia, as well as lead to risky
behaviors.
This manic state can last from 1 week to several
months, and though it is typically characteristic of
bipolar disorder, it is also encountered in other
conditions, such as schizoaffective disorder.
A recent study reported that the treatment of bipolar
disorder costs the United States healthcare system an
estimated $25 billion per year. Also, the symptoms
associated with this condition can seriously affect
individuals' quality of life.
For these reasons, researchers are always on the
lookout for modifiable lifestyle factors, such as diet,
that may be able to influence the onset or severity of
symptoms, since such factors can be fairly easily
acted upon.
Recently, researchers from the Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD,
have been able to isolate one dietary factor that
appears to be linked to the onset of manic episodes:
eating processed meats, such as salami or beef jerky.
They report their findings in the journal Molecular
Psychiatry.
The first clues were identified by Dr. Robert Yolken
and his team, who analyzed data regarding the health
and diet of 1,101 participants aged 18 to 65,
collected in 2007–2017, as part of an ongoing study.
Some of these participants had a history of
psychiatric conditions, while others did not.
As those with pre-existing psychiatric conditions had
been recruited from among patients receiving
assistance in the Sheppard Pratt Health System in
Baltimore, the researchers were able to assess
information regarding their dietary habits prior to
hospital admission.
To the scientists' surprise, they found that, of the
participants who had been hospitalized due to a
manic episode, the likelihood that they had a history
of consuming processed meats was about 3.5 times
higher than that of the healthy participants.
But, a history of eating processed meats was not
linked to either bipolar disorder or schizoaffective
disorder in individuals who were not admitted to
hospital due to a manic episode.
Also, no other types of food had a significant link to
the two disorders, or to the onset of a manic phase.
"We looked at a number of different dietary
exposures," says Dr. Yolken, "and cured meat really
stood out. It wasn't just that people with mania have
an abnormal diet."
What makes processed meats harmful?
But why processed meats, in particular? The
research team hypothesized that this may be due to a
highly controversial ingredient used in industrial
meat processing and curing processes: nitrates.
Research has linked nitrates with the onset of
neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, so
the investigators involved with the new study
thought it plausible that they might contribute to
mania, as well.
"It's clear that mania is a complex neuropsychiatric
state, and that both genetic vulnerabilities and
environmental factors are likely involved in the
emergence and severity of bipolar disorder and
associated manic episodes," says Dr. Seva
Khambadkone.
"Our results suggest," Dr. Khambadkone goes on to
explain, "that nitrated cured meat could be one
environmental player in mediating mania."
The findings of this study do not necessarily indicate
a causal relationship between dietary factors and the
onset of manic episode, and more research is needed
to understand the potential mechanisms at play.
Still, the authors believe that they add to the
increasing amount of evidence indicating the impact
of gut health on brain activity and psychiatric wellbeing.

Get on a clean, plant based diet and straighten out your mental health.
It will not be easy but the results will be well worth the effort.
